The Warsaw Systematic Review Course Level 1 – Warsaw, Poland.

Please note that although this course is taught by experts within the medical field, the same methodology applies to, and is used by systematic reviewers in all fields of research.
Who should attend: all people wishing to undertake reviews of randomised studies.
This course will appeal to all those interested in completing a Cochrane-style review.  Experienced tutors and facilitators will be available to give you practical and individual advice.  After attending the course, participants should be able to understand search strategies, extract data, manage the results of systematic searches, understand the syntheses of the data, apply the methods and conduct reviews independently.  As this is an introductory course, no previous knowledge of systematic review is required.

Brief course content:
Day 1: Introduction to EBM and role of Systematic Review-overview, Critical appraisal-practical, Defining a clinical question, Developing a protocol, Group discussions/PICO.
Day 2: Searching and locating trials, Reference manager software practical, Selecting trials and references, Introduction to RevMan 5 and references, Using RevMan 5.
Day 3: Assessing study quality, Assessing risk of bias-practical, Assessing risk of bias in RevMan, Types of data and data-extraction-interactive, Data extraction practical.
Day4: Principles of meta-analysis and heterogeneity-interactive, Meta-analysis, sub-groups, sensitivity, Units of analysis, Setting up comparisons, Entering data, RevMan-practical, Interpreting results and clarifications.  

Study methods:

The course utilises a combination of lectures, small group discussions, workshops, library-based interactive tutorials, with hands on practical work at computer stations using RevMan and Endnote software.  Review Manager (RevMan) is the software used for preparing and maintaining Cochrane Reviews. Attendees use their own laptop.


Professor Zbys Fedorowicz, Lead Methodologist on Breast Cancer Clinical Guideline, Breast Cancer Society of Bahrain, Health Services of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Over the past 10 years Professor Fedorowicz ’s postings have included advisor roles to the President of the Supreme Council of Health, advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of Health, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  Founder and Director of Cochrane BAHRAIN (The Cochrane Collaboration) since 2005 and a member of the Cochrane Steering Group (2004-2010).  Chairman of the Evidence-based Medicine Committee WHO (EMAME) (2005-2012).  Professor and Head of Research at the College of Medicine AMA International University of Bahrain (2012-3).  Editor, scientific board or international advisory board member for a number of international peer reviewed journals including BMJ, Clinical Evidence, Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine and clinical guidelines developers e.g. SIGN NICE GRADE Working Group Member (2010 to the present).  He has published 50+ Cochrane systematic reviews with topics in:  Breast Cancer/Dermatology/Eyes &Vision/ Heart/ENT/Cystic Fibrosis & Genetic Disorders/ Colorectal Cancer/Multiple Sclerosis/Oral Health/ Metabolic & Endocrine Disorders.  Extensive range of publications in high IF peer reviewed journals on Evidence-based Medicine and research methodology relevant to systematic reviews and clinical guidelines.

Specialties: Dermatologist with special interest in allergy (contact eczema, occupational dermatoses, food allergy, drug allergy etc) and evidence based medicine.


Ms Jun Xia, Founder & Chairman, Systematic Review Solutions Ltd.  Systematic Reviewer, Cochrane Schizophrenia Group.  Consultant Systematic Review Editor, Cochrane Skin Group. Steering Group Member, Evidence-based Medicine Centre, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK.
Jun has a background in healthcare research methods and evidence synthesis.  She joined the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group in 2005, specializes in research methodology and systematic review.  To date, she has published over 30 Cochrane systematic reviews in relation to the effectiveness of care for people with schizophrenia, stroke, depression, cancer treatment and pain management. Jun established Systematic Review Solutions Ltd (SRS) in 2009, providing training on systematic review and evidence-based practice to clinicians and healthcare professionals globally.  She has delivered over 60 systematic review workshops globally and over 3000 healthcare professionals have benefited from the training.

Mr Krzysztof Łach
Obtained master's degree in Public Health from the Jagiellonian University Medical College (Krakow, Poland) and postgraduate diploma in Health Economics,University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
 Krzysztof has 10 years of experience in technical, research and strategic facets of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) / Outcomes Research from multiple country and local perspectives in Europe, including 2 years of market access activities i.e. secondary landscape analysis, HTA review, payer research and value communication in various disease areas across a range of geographical markets in Europe (oncology, haemato-oncology, haematology, antimicrobial resistance).  Throughout professional career he developed numerous systematic reviews for HTA submissions / reports of both diagnostics and therapeutic technologies (drugs and medical devices) for application in a wide range of disease areas (including rare diseases).
