Please note that although this course is taught by experts within the medical field, the same methodology applies to, and is used by systematic reviewers in all fields of research.

This course will appeal to all those interested in completing a Cochrane-style review.  Experienced tutors and facilitators will be available to give you practical and individual advice.  After attending the course, participants should be able to understand search strategies, extract data, manage the results of systematic searches, understand the syntheses of the data, apply the methods and conduct reviews independently.

Who the intermediate level 2 workshop is for:
This intermediate systematic review workshop is suitable for people who have prior knowledge of the process and key techniques of conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.  It would be most attractive to those who are currently completing a systematic review or meta-analysis and those who have already attended the introductory course.

Aim of the workshop:
This course aims to facilitate the delegates to complete their ongoing systematic review or meta-analysis by the end of the workshop.

Learning outcome:
The key outcome of this workshop is to help delegates to complete their systematic review. In the process of which, we will deal with some of the advanced issues in systematic review and meta-analysis.

Format of the workshop:
The workshop takes a problem-based learning approach and adopts a highly interactive seminar format, where delegates will be working within teams of 3 to 4 people with experienced tutors providing tailored facilitation specific to the group’s needs.  Delegates can expect a mixture of didactic lecturing (15%), seminar discussion around common errors (25%), hands-on software sessions (10%) and critical appraisal of research papers (5%). Most of the time is allocated to one-to-one facilitation (45%).

Who are the facilitators?
Experienced tutors, including methodologists, information specialists and statisticians, will be working with individual review teams to resolve technical difficulties and provide hands-on support.

Brief course content:

Day 1: Introduction to the Workshop, SR Teams Introduce Projects:  stage reached,
difficulties encountered, Data-Screening/Extraction (tutor facilitated), Seminar: individual groups  
share common issues raised from screening process (tutor-facilitated),
Further Data Extraction/Input and RevMan.
Day 2: Data Extraction continued, Data Entry and Analysis.
Day 3: Write up Day with Tutor Facilitation, Critical appraisal of Systematic Reviews.

Study methods:

The course utilises RevMan and Endnote software.  Review Manager (RevMan) is the software used for preparing and maintaining Cochrane Reviews. Attendees use their own laptop.

Professor Zbys Fedorowicz, Lead Methodologist on Breast Cancer Clinical Guideline, Breast Cancer Society of Bahrain, Health Services of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Over the past 10 years Professor Fedorowicz ’s postings have included advisor roles to the President of the Supreme Council of Health, advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of Health, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  Founder and Director of Cochrane BAHRAIN (The Cochrane Collaboration) since 2005 and a member of the Cochrane Steering Group (2004-2010).  Chairman of the Evidence-based Medicine Committee WHO (EMAME) (2005-2012).  Professor and Head of Research at the College of Medicine AMA International University of Bahrain (2012-3).  Editor, scientific board or international advisory board member for a number of international peer reviewed journals including BMJ, Clinical Evidence, Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine and clinical guidelines developers e.g. SIGN NICE GRADE Working Group Member (2010 to the present).  He has published 50+ Cochrane systematic reviews with topics in:  Breast Cancer/Dermatology/Eyes & Vision/ Heart/ENT/Cystic Fibrosis & Genetic Disorders/ Colorectal Cancer/Multiple Sclerosis/Oral Health/ Metabolic & Endocrine Disorders.  Extensive range of publications in high IF peer reviewed journals on Evidence-based Medicine and research methodology relevant to systematic reviews and clinical guidelines.

Jun has a background in healthcare research methods and evidence synthesis.  She joined the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group in 2005, specializes in research methodology and systematic review.  To date, she has published over 30 Cochrane systematic reviews in relation to the effectiveness of care for people with schizophrenia, stroke, depression, cancer treatment and pain management. Jun established Systematic Review Solutions Ltd (SRS) in 2009, providing training on systematic review and evidence-based practice to clinicians and healthcare professionals globally.  She has delivered over 60 systematic review workshops globally and over 3000 healthcare professionals have benefited from the training.

Mr Krzysztof Łach
Obtained master's degree in Public Health from the Jagiellonian University Medical College (Krakow, Poland) and postgraduate diploma in Health Economics,University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
 Krzysztof has 10 years of experience in technical, research and strategic facets of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) / Outcomes Research from multiple country and local perspectives in Europe, including 2 years of market access activities i.e. secondary landscape analysis, HTA review, payer research and value communication in various disease areas across a range of geographical markets in Europe (oncology, haemato-oncology, haematology, antimicrobial resistance).  Throughout professional career he developed numerous systematic reviews for HTA submissions / reports of both diagnostics and therapeutic technologies (drugs and medical devices) for application in a wide range of disease areas (including rare diseases).
